A recent study combines information from various sources to estimate the piracy landscape in South America and concludes that nearly 50% of the population has visited pirate websites or services in the last month. Such services included cyber lockers, P2P networks and illegal IPTV streaming websites.
Cyber locker traffic accounts for more than 50% of all piracy traffic, while P2P traffic accounts for less than 35%. Pirated live IPTV broadcasts use up to 10% of piracy traffic. Overall, the local piracy landscape generates 2.3 million gigabytes per day. However, this is not much if compared to other regions: for instance, North America generates 20,000 petabytes of piracy bandwidth, Europe – 26,000 petabytes. But for South America, even 790 petabytes is a considerable proportion, as the local Internet infrastructure is underdeveloped. This means that copyright owners may face even higher levels of piracy in the future, when the speeds increase and infrastructure improves.
The results of the study are expected to raise awareness of the problem and serve as an important lobbying tool to persuade local lawmakers to tighten anti-piracy legislation.
